Heartworms tend to be confused with intestinal worms and mistaken as a parasite that can easily be treated with an oral dewormer. Unfortunately this is not the case. Heartworm disease can be easily explained in three points. 1. It is caused by mosquitoes, they carry the microfilaria or “baby worms” that are transported into your pet’s bloodstream when bit. 2. Heartworm disease can be easily prevented with a yearly blood test and monthly preventative which comes in either oral or topical form. 3. While it is costly and requires tedious work, Heartworm Disease is usually treatable if caught early enough.
We at Mission Veterinary Hospital believe client education is a huge key to success. Our staff is always more than happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have. We carry flyers, brochures, and even have educational videos up on our social media pages to help with the explanation of topics such as Heartworm Disease.
